Little League Insider Radio: Episode 1

On the debut episode of Little League Insider Radio, John Malone educates co-hosts Mike McGinnis and Chris DeAngelo about the Little League tournament in its early stages. In the second segment, Nate Andrus, the manager of Dixie Little League from Utah, joins the show to talk about his team’s run to the West Regional Tournament. Local favorite, Pearl River from New York, came on the show live to talk about their epic comeback in the NY Section 4 championship game, and finally we took a phone call to discuss the differences in the tournament from the 90s to today.

Next week's show is going to be right in the heart of state championship games around the country, so it should be a big one. We're looking for more phone calls and more interviews. If you'd like to be on Little League Insider Radio next Sunday, let us know on Facebook.

You can play the show right here on this page, or download it from the bottom right corner of the link.

More State Champions Crowned!

For starters, I’m going to bring up the radio show today. It went as smoothly as a first show can go I think. The feedback sounded pretty solid afterwards. For all those who missed it, we will have a download on the site by Monday. On the show we talked to Nate Andrus of Dixie Little League in Utah. He was a fantastic interview and gave us some great stuff. Then, we had Pearl River Little League of New York come in and talk with us live and that was also a lot of fun. We had a couple phone calls. One went well, one had a bunch of feedback, but I was happy with the way things well overall. Thank you guys for participating and listening. We hope to have a bigger and better show next week. Once you listen to it this week, but please send me any thoughts you’d like. Now…. onto the roundup!

Washington

Eastlake won its first state championship by winning eight straight games in a week including two against Federal Way on Sunday. Federal Way beat Eastlake 6-5 on the tournament’s opening day before Eastlake went on a tear. Eastlake's 12-year old softball team is currently in San Bernadino as they ALSO won the state championship.

District of Columbia

The two pre-tournament favorites took care of business and will now face each other on Monday in the DC championship game. Northwest Washington knocked off Capitol Hill LL 6-3 and Capitol City beat Banneker City 15-2 in four innings. Capitol City is definitely the favorite with the pitching edge of Robert Reynolds.

New Hampshire
Salem took Game 1 on Satuday  8-4 over Reye, but both teams busted out some big pitching performances in Game 2. Rye had just two hits, but they were both home runs and evened the series with a 2-1 victory over Salem. Dylan Chase and Max Malila hit the two home runs and it sounds like they’re the big stars for Rye. Chase pitched all six innings and struck out 10. Nick Robertson homered for Salem in the loss. Game 3 is on Tuesday for a berth in the New England Regional.

Connecticut
Both sectional championships are set with Westport in the driver’s seat in Section 1 and South Windsor American coming out the winners bracket in Section 2.

Edgewood continued to pound the baseball when it doesn’t face Westport and beat Orange 14-9 to reach the title game. Edgewood has scored 44 runs in the three wins, but was no-hit by Westport, who will have its full complement of pitchers available on Tuesday and Wednesday, if necessary.

Coginchaug, the defending 11-year old state finalists, hung onto a 7-6 victory over Waterford South behind two home runs from Cole Neidmann. Waterford was the 10-year old New England and East region champions two years ago.

Nevada

The title game is set with Henderson in the driver’s seat after a 6-3 win over Mountain Ridge in the winners bracket final. Mountain Ridge knocked off Reno Continental to get back to the championship.

Georgia

Warner Robins American moved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 6-0 blanking of Cartersville. WRALL has yet to allow a run so far. I wish I knew what was in the water in that town.

Ohio

New Albany picked up a victory in the state tournament and is now in the winners bracket semifinals. NALL will now face Hamilton West Side who has won four straight state championships, six of the last seven, and eight of the last 11. Boardman and Guernsey are on the other side of the winners bracket.

Maryland

State title favorite, Berlin, completed an amazing come back over two days (due to weather) and had a two-run walkoff home run this morning to beat Bethesda  4-3. They played again later in the winners bracket and beat up on Elkton in a mercy-rule victory. They now face Conococheague in the winners bracket final and are set up pretty well. It shows you how much some luck is needed in the tournament.

Northern California

Redwood Belmont Shores picked up another victory with a hard-fought 7-5 win over West Sacramento a day after beating River Park National 10-0. West Sac had a bye, so the offensive output was definitely a good sign from RBS who most likely faced a number one pitcher.

Southern California

Chula Vista Eastlake picked up another high-scoring victory, this time over Coronal Nationa 12-8. Eastlake trailed 6-2 before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning

Louisiana

Bossier National knocked off not one but two REGIONAL powers in South Lake Charles and Lafayette Louisiana. They are in the driver’s seat against Lafayette on Monday night for the state championship. The league has never won a state title before. In fact, the two powerhouse leagues have won 16 of the last 17 state titles.

Indiana

Hagerstown won its district for the first time in history and decided that wasn’t enough. Hagerstown knocked off Chet Waggoner 5-4 in its first state tournament game.

Rhode Island

Lincoln is definitely back. The boys in the ugliest uniforms known to man look like a big threat for the New England crown. They romped through their tough district and know they’re in the catbird seat in the state championship game after two shutouts. Lincoln beat King Philip today 11-0 after beating Cranston Western 13-0 yesterday.

Pennsylvania

Warwick and Keystone each started strong with big wins on opening day of the PA state tournament. West Point, one of the 2-3 tourney favorites, needed a walkoff home run to pick up its first victory. Keystone looks like an express train that won’t stop, however.

State Champions List

Utah- Dixie LL (St. George)
Alabama- Jackson LL
Oklahoma- Tulsa LL
Idaho- Coeur d’Alene LL
Washington- Eastlake LL (Sammamish)

If I'm not mentioning your state, please send me a message on Facebook or Twitter telling me what's going on in your neck of the woods. There's so many teams still alive, it's tough to get everyone. So let me know.

Many State Tournaments Underway or Set

Well it's finally the weekend and state tournaments have kicked off around the country in full force now. In the East, section tournaments are still wrapping up and I was an ambitious traveler today. I took in a winners bracket game in Connecticut Section 1, then drove to the NJ Section 3 "if" game. I was not disappointed.

In Connecticut, I wanted to get a look at Westport, the team everyone is talking about. Despite playing a "lackadaisical" game according to their manager, I was still impressed. In the first round of sections, Chad Knight tossed a no-hitter over 5+ innings. Supposedly, Harry Azadian is even better. I happened to see Azadian today and the hype was real. He showed great control despite a 70-mph fastball and threw curveballs and sliders where he wanted them. He was perfect through 3+ innings before giving up a bloop single and being lifted for pitch count. I disagreed with the move, but Westport came away with a hard-fought 5-3 victory anyway. I thought Azadian should've thrown 65 not 50. Just my opinion.

As for the offense, its obviously better than the showing they had today. I'm going to give them a pass for the hitting, although some base running blunders cost them runs. Knight and Azadian both hit that's for sure and Offenberg, a great shortstop, hit a big momentum swinging home run. I think its a team that can win the state title now with its two aces and seriously compete for a regional championship. No pressure, Westport.

After the long trek to the Jersey Shore, I was ready for Toms River East American and Nottingham, two of the most storied Little League programs in New Jersey, the East, and in Toms River's case, the world. Nottingham has been a state title favorite since the districts and held a 13-3 lead in the fourth inning against Toms River East. TREA scored 12 runs in the inning though and knocked Nottingham off 15-13 setting up the "if" game. This one didn't disappoint either. Toms River worked Nottingham's hard-throwing ace deep into pitch counts, and had timely hits to score three runs in the third inning. Nottingham took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, but pitch count knocked the ace out of the game and TRE scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead and eventually the section title.

Toms River East hasn't advanced to the state final four since 1999, the last time TREA went to the Little League World Series. "The Beast from the East" also went in 1995 and won the world title in 1998. Their crosstown rivals Toms River Little League advanced to the LLWS in 2009, however.

This version of Toms River East doesn't have that big-time pitcher like Casey Gaynor or a hitter like Todd Frazier, but the lineup all the way through to the bench can hit, and the first six batters all have one-swing home run pop.

We're not going to have a full national round up today because we'll do it tomorrow on the debut of Little League Insider Radio. This is a big undertaking, but should be really fun. It can be as diverse and fun as you guys make it. I encourage phone calls throughout the show. Tomorrow we will have the Utah state champions on the phone and one of the New York state tournament participants live on the broadcast from Emmett's Castle in Pearl River, NY. Make sure you tune in at 1 p.m. on Sunday at www.wfasam.com or WFAS 1230 AM on your iHeart Radio app.

Massapequa Coast Wins Third Straight Long Island Title

Written by John Malone, editor

It took nine innings of heart-stopping baseball, but Massapequa Coast finally did it. The 12-year old all-stars were the first team in Long Island history to win Section 6 titles as 10s, 11s, and 12s.

For all nine innings, Smithtown National refused to just roll over for the favored boys from Coast, but it wasn't enough as Massapequa pulled out a 6-3 victory. After recording just one hit after the fourth inning, Massapequa finally caught the bug. Nick Schneidler reached by error to start the ninth inning and Nick Collins dropped down a bunt single during the ensuing at-bat. The ball was thrown away deep into right field allowing Schneidler to score and Collins to reach third base. Matt Zanfardino drove a line drive into the gap for an RBI-double to add another run. After another error, Mike Moreno hit an RBI-single to give Coast its final tally.

"Hitting is always contagious," Manager Paul DeGiovanni said. "The key was our pitchers keeping us in the game and allowing us to get hot eventually."

One of those key pitchers was Zanfardino who took over in the fifth inning. The imposing right hander allowed a run in his first inning of work but picked up the win with four dominant innings of one run and two-hit ball. He struck out 10 batters including five straight in the fifth and sixth innings.

"He didn't pitch much for us in the past, but he grew five inches last year," DeGiovanni said. "So it took him a year to grow into his body and now he's comfortable with himself. He was fantastic."

Massapequa took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with leadoff double from Ross Mitton and an infield single from Moreno. After Moreno took second base without a play, both runners were able to score on a wild pitch.

Smithtown got one back in the third with a home run from Hennessy who was also the starting pitcher, but Coast answered in the fourth when Schneidler drove in Eric Treble with an infield hit.

Smithtown continued to battle and scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game. Zanfardino and Massapequa never wavered even when Smithtown made spectacular plays. In the sixth, with a runner on second and one out, Zanfardino ripped a line drive up the middle but it was miraculously snagged by Lynch who stepped on the bag for the double play. It was a big momentum shift.

"We've been together since we were eight years old, and this entire team has been together since we won the East Region championship as 10-year olds," DeGiovanni said. "The kids know how to battle and we can find ways to win."

Now, Massapequa Coast heads back to the state tournament in Lockport, NY for the third straight year with their sights set on one more state championships. They open against South Shore American, the New York City champions on Tuesday and they'll be without Zanfardino and Collins (4 IP, 2R, 4H, 6K, 2BB, 1HBP) who both pitched 85 pitches in the Long Island championship.

"We still have our number two pitcher available and my son has been hurt since Memorial Day," DeGiovanni said. "We should have him back this week, so we're still okay with arms."

Either way, Massapequa's resiliency was evident on Friday night despite a lot of pressure.

"This team is very close, nothing really fazes them," DeGiovanni said. "We've brainwashed them with our motto of eleven equals one, and they always pick each other up."

Little League Roundup (July 18, 2013)

Written by John Malone, editor

Note: This is the third of three blogs today, make sure you read them all
With a lot state tournaments starting around the country this weekend, sections are starting to wrap up in the East. Others are in the break between tournaments resting up. Here’s tonight’s edition of Little League Roundup.

New York

Five of the six sections are set now after Pearl River finished off one of the most amazing comebacks these eyes have ever seen. PRLL rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and knocked off a really really good New Rochelle Central team, 14-13. You can read a full game article HERE.

Pearl River changed their lineup today for the first time and moved its three hitter, Sean Flaherty, into the two-hole. The move ended up working perfectly for Pearl River. As good Little League minds know, you want your best hitter leading off or batting second at worst in Little League. There are not enough at-bats and you DO NOT want to be stuck with your “guy” on deck. Great move by Pearl River.

New York City wrapped up its first-ever double elimination section tournament today when South Shore American of Staten Island (one of the most storied programs in the country) rallied to beat Franklin Square 10-7. Thomas DiOrio homered and picked up the win in relief after SSA trailed 4-0 early. Hulking Nick Scala, South Shore’s pitching ace would’ve been available for the “if” game. He also homered.

New Jersey

Wayne National won the Section 1 championship behind six home runs including two from winning pitcher Dominic Cancellieri. You can read a full game story right HERE.

In Section 3, Toms River East American (three-time LLWS participants and one-time champion) put on another hitting display that could rival the 1927 Yankees. TREA beat South Wall 19-5 and has now scored 59 runs in the four games of the Section 3 tournament. Toms River East has hit 16 home runs in the sections. However, TREA has the toughest test of all now, knocking off state title favorite Nottingham…twice.

Connecticut

CT’s District 2 has been locked down by Fairfield American for a few years now. FALL has won three straight CT state championships in the 12-year old division and went to Williamsport twice. Their cross-town rival, Fairfield National, won the state title as 11-year olds last year, but Westport decided to break up the party.

Westport won the championship last week and is now primed as the state tournament favorite after beating Bristol Edgewood 8-0 in the Section 1 tournament. Edgewood scored 23 runs on Wednesday to open the tournament, but couldn’t muster a hit off of Westport pitcher Chad Knight who also struck out 13 batters. What’s the impressive thing about that feat? Harry Azadian had a no-hitter through 5+ innings in Westport’s last game.

Washington D.C.

While the District of Columbia has six teams in its tournament now, it’s truly a three-team race between perennial power Capitol City, recent champion Northwest Washington, and newcomer Capitol Hill. With just one game left in the round-robin pool play, Capitol City has restored order and is in the driver’s seat. Cap City didn’t allow a run to either Capitol Hill or Northwest Washington in its two victories against the other contenders. In fact, Cap City didn’t allow a runner to reach second base in either game. Against Northwest Washington, Robert Reynolds was perfect through 5 1/3 innings including 13 strikeouts. His relief didn’t allow a runner either to combine on the perfect game.

Arizona

The Arizona state tournament kicked off on Thursday and some of the tradional powers picked up big wins in the opening round. Chandler National South beat Casa Grande 18-8, Canyon del Oro beat West Flagstaff 16-6, and Arrowhead beat Mountain View 16-5.

NJ Section 1: Wayne National races to title

Written by Kyle Stackpole, contributing writer

Usually brand new 13-year olds receive presents on their birthday.

On Thursday night, Wayne National’s Dominic Cancellieri gave his team the biggest present of all.

 A sectional championship.

Behind Cancellieri’s dominant pitching and incredible hitting, Wayne National defeated Par-Troy East 11-1 in five innings to win the Section 1 title. The game was shortened by the mercy rule.

On the mound, Cancellieri pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up just one run and two hits while striking out 10. With the bat, he was just as impressive. He hit two home runs and drove in three for a Wayne National team that hit six home runs in the game. Jack Feit added a pair of round-trippers and John Boscarino and Ari Field each hit a solo shot.

Even more amazing was that on a day dedicated to him, he pulled through for his team.

“It feels great,” Cancellieri said. “We thought we were meant to be in sectionals last year. This year, we hoped to make it past the districts. Now look at us; we’re onto states.”

Cancellieri is one of three returning players from last year’s squad. Boscarino and Jared Strus also played on last year’s sectional squad. Experience has obviously helped this team understand the amount of work it takes to be one of four teams left in New Jersey. The other major aspect is working hard every day.

When asked how they were so successful throughout the tournament, manager Paul Boscarino put it simply.

“Practice, Practice, Practice.”

“We work hard,” added an assistant coach. “Whenever we do not have a game, we practice for two to three hours a night.”

That hard work has sure paid off. Wayne National has outscored its opponents 28-11 during the three games at Dumont.

As satisfied as this team is at this point in the season, the road to Williamsport has just begun. They begin the state tournament on Wednesday in Wallington for a chance to represent the state of New Jersey in the Mid-Atlantic Tournament. According to Cancellieri, success for this team is centered on a few factors.

“We need to pitch well and not walk batters. Those extra batters are the ones that will kill us. We don’t have to worry about hitting. We’re going to hit.”

Wayne National sure hit the heck out of the ball tonight. They finished the game with 11 runs, 11 hits, and six home runs.

With an explosive lineup, pitching will determine how far this Wayne National team can go.

NY S4: Pearl River Completes Unparalleled Rally

Written by John Malone, editor

In 2011, Pearl River’s 10-year olds won a Section 4 championship and advanced to the state tournament. To get there, they needed an 11-run miracle rally in the sixth inning to beat Harrison in the “if” game.

Two years later, Pearl River needed another one.

Trailing New Rochelle Central 13-4 in the Section 4 championship "if" game, Pearl River rallied once again and stunned New Rochelle with 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sean Flaherty blasted an opposite field walk-off grand slam with two outs in the sixth to win the game.

The rally started with a walk to Sean Byman and a pair of New Rochelle errors. Then, the hit parade began. Jonathon Farley, Antonio Rinaldi, Brendan Tarsnane, Jack McKee, and Matt Russo had consecutive singles to cut the lead to 13-9 with no outs. With one out, Byman walked again this time bringing in a run. Finally, with two outs and the bases loaded Flaherty’s big moment came.

New Rochelle jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning started by a leadoff home run from Jayson Rodopoulus. Pearl River answered with a pair of runs spearheaded by an RBI double from Farley and an RBI groundout from Tarsnane.

New Rochelle’s bats kept the pressure on. Jayson Rodopoulus deposited another home run over the wall, his ninth of the tournament. His twin brother, Johnnie Rodopoulus added another four-bagger, his sixth of the tournament.

Pearl River starter Jack McKee settled down and shut the big bats of New Rochelle down in the third and fourth innings as PRLL slowly made its way back cutting the deficit to 7-4 on an RBI single from Flaherty and a solo home run by McKee.

New Rochelle exploded for five more runs in the fifth on home runs from Jack Bruckner and Ryan Diaz. In the sixth inning, New Rochelle hit its sixth home run of the game off the bat of Ceasar Choflet. It was the 16th home run in the last three games for the sluggers from the Queen City.

It wasn’t enough to knock out the resilient boys from Pearl River.

Pearl River now travels to Lockport, NY for the state tournament. As the Section 4 champions, Pearl River receives a first-round bye in the double elimination tournament and will face the winner of Auburn and Horseheads on Wednesday. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, South Shore American (Staten Island), and the Long Island champion (Massapequa Coast/Smithtown National winner) will round out the field.

The Pearl River All-Stars will be LIVE on the air for the first-ever edition of Little League Insider Radio broadcast on AM 1230 WFAS at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The show will be broadcast from Emmett’s Castle in Pearl River. You can listen online at wfasam.com.

Notes: New Rochelle's offense over the last week has been some of the most impressive hitting I've ever seen. I can't think of an offense as deep and as powerful in New York since possibly 2002's Harlem team. The Rodopoulus twins & company were the real deal. Losing their first game hurt them pitching-wise and they couldn't close it out. They have nothing to hang their head about.

Nearly the Home Stretch (July 17, 2013)

Written by John Malone, editor

We're almost into that point of the international tournament where every state is in the final stages. A few states have wrapped up already like Utah and Alabama, others will kick their tournaments off this weekend, and the bigger states will wind down next week.

Connecticut

The sectionals began in Connecticut today and the bats were out. Bristol Edgewood bashed six home runs in four innings against Stamford National. Stamford ALSO bashed six home runs in the game. It was too little too late for the Nats though as Edgewood had an 11-0 lead in the third inning. Stamford responded with a five-spot, but Edgewood added 12 more runs in the fourth to put the game away. Both teams conserved pitching obviously.

Now, Edgewood faces Westport in a potential matchup of the two best teams in the state. Orange beat Seymour and awaits the winner in the winners bracket final.

Maine

Acadians won the District 1 championship in dramatic fashion this week. In a tie game in the bottom of the sixth, Drew Shea hit a leadoff single. He advanced to third on a double by Jacob Mitchell. Ellsworth, making the correct baseball move of an intentional walk failed to do so properly, and Shea scored from third to win the district title and advance to the state tournament.

Virginia

West Springfield American won its district for the third time in a row when it beat league-mates West Springfield National 11-1 in the final. They will look to defend their 11-year old state championship in Lynchburg next week. The schedule isn’t easy. WSA will face Bridgewater, the team that beat them in the 10-year old state championship game.

Fairfax National won its first district championship since 2002 with a 7-0 victory over SYA East.

Alabama

Jackson beat former United States champion Phenix City in the state championship game to advance to the Southeast regional tournament in Warner Robins, GA. Jackson won the state championship in 2009, its only title. EJ Jackson and Dylon Thomas hit back-to-back home runs in the championship game.

Texas

Fort Worth Westside hasn’t won a section title in Texas West since 2002. That season, Westside went all the way to the United States semifinals losing one of the most memorable games of all-time, a pitcher’s duel between Aaron Alvey and Walker Kelly. The two pitchers combined for 40 strikeouts and both pitched nine innings (Yes it was a different time back then!). Anyway, like that team, this Westside squad has faced elimination early and often but continues to persevere. Read a great article about the connections and memories of the two teams HERE.

 Delaware

Millsboro won the District 3 championship from the losers’ bracket with a 7-1 victory over Lewes. Javon Toppin was masterful on the mound, completely shutting down Lewes’ offense and striking out 10. Millsboro won six games in eight days after dropping the first game of the tournament.

Canal battled back to the championship game in District 2 with a victory to try and get a crack at Newark National, the two-time defending 12-year old state champions.

In District 1, Camden-Wyoming has advanced to the winners’ bracket final with a pair of strong victories including a 15-0 win over Smyrna-Clayton. In a 7-3 win over Milford in the tournament opener, Tommy Pomatto struck out 14 batters. The team hit three home runs in the win.

Utah: Dixie Little League (St. George, UT)

The first of our state champion previews starts with Utah which finished up this week. Based on the chatter out there, Dixie Little League may have a shot to be the first Utah team to reach Williamsport. It's a tall task, however.

Thirty-Year History:
State champions – 1997, 1990, and 1989.

Number of Majors Teams: 8

Roster

Mason Creager
Boston Miller
Chandler Welch
Bronson Andrus
Wyatt Woodland
Blake Milne
Jayden Peterson
Brenden Blanchard
Collin Garrett
Bo Barben
Austin Hepworth
Landon Levine

Preview: Dixie last won the Utah state championship back in 1997 when the West included the Northwest. That year, Dixie made a great run through the tournament all the way to the winners’ bracket final. Utah is a single-district state which doubles as the state tournament. Dixie went 4-0 through the tournament while shutting out its first three opponents. Dixie averaged nearly 17 runs per game.

Dixie has home run power throughout the lineup and obviously a strong pitching staff. Wyatt Woodland hits three home runs in the last two games and Mason Creager added a pair of homers in the state final.

Dixie coach Nate Andrus won a state title for Dixie on the 1989 team… he was coached by his father, much like the current team with his son Bronson.
