Capitol City (DC) Shakes Up Mid-Atlantic Region

Capitol City Little League of Washington D.C. has more than held its own at the Little League Baseball Eastern Region Tournament. Cap City had leads in each of its first two games and threw monkey wrenches into a couple teams' pitching plans. In the third game of the tournament, Capitol City finally earned more than respect, it earned a victory.

Behind a much-needed offensive outburst from Robert Reynolds and Isaac Frumkin, Cap City took a 10-3 lead after three innings and hung on for dear life in the sixth to record an 11-10 victory over previously unbeaten Berlin, Maryland.

"I was really excited because I didn't hit the ball well in the game against Pennsylvania," Reynolds said. "I was just looking for pitches in my zone and I got a lot of those today."

Reynolds was 4-for-4 with a home run, four runs batted in, and three runs scored to lead Capitol City. Frumkin was 3-for-4 with a triple at the top of the order. Usually a dynamic catcher, Frumkin came on in the fourth inning to record a long save with 2 1/3 innings pitched, two runs, and just two hits.

Capitol City led 11-8 heading into the sixth inning with Frumkin on the hill. Maryland's Tristan McDonough promptly ripped a double, and then Billy Wheatley was hit by a pitch. With two outs and runners on second and third, Jack Rosenberg ripped a double to left field plating both runs. The ball squirted through the outfielders legs and rolled all the way to the deep left field corner. Maryland tried to bring Wheatley all the way around to score but shortstop Collin Bosley-Smith threw a perfect strike to Sofia Ohanian at home plate to cut down the tying run for the game-winning play.

"I saw the coach waving the runner home, but I saw the guy stop, and then kept on going," Frumkin said. "There were perfect throws from Noah (Gold) and Collin though, and we got him by a mile."

Capitol City took a 7-3 lead in the second inning with Frumkin's RBI triple, a Rory Friel RBI single, and Reynolds' home run. In the third, Cap City padded its lead with three more runs with RBI singles from Aaron Rosenthal, and two more RBI from Reynolds.

Capitol City starter, Bosley-Smith, allowed three first-inning runs to Berlin with some control issues but buckled down to retire five of the next six batters he faced in a solid start that was marred with inconsistent calls at home plate and frequent game stoppages among other things. He came out with 65 pitches to stay eligible for the potential semifinal.

D.C. took a 3-0 lead after one inning with an RBI double from Zach Lordan, an RBI from Sofia Ohanian (who had a web gem at first base), and an RBI from Aiden Trinity. Berlin answered back with three runs on a variety of walks, infield hits, and a fielder's choice.

"I was really impressed with the way Collin pitched today. He came back from a rough first inning and threw really well," Reynolds, the staff ace, said. "He blocked everything out. All the pitchers did a great job working through stuff today."

Maryland never gave up in its quest to come back from the huge deficit. Matt Kinsey had a big two-run single in the fourth, and Wes Powell added a two-run triple to follow. Powell scored on a wild pitch to bring Maryland within two runs.

In an effort to keep the score within reason, Maryland went to its ace, McDonough, in the sixth. Reynolds ripped a single to lead off the inning and then scored on three passed balls to add the ever-important insurance run. It ended up being the winning run.

"I hope people realize we can compete here. We could've won the first two games and we got one now," Frumkin said. "We're very confident. We knew we could win a game, now we want to win another one."

The victory was the second win for a District of Columbia team in two years (Northwest Washington LL beat eventual Mid-Atlantic champion, Par-Troy East (NJ) last year) and the first for Capitol City since it beat Haverstraw (NY) back in 2008. Now, Cap City will try to reach the Mid-Atlantic semifinals for the first time since 2004.

Washington D.C. faces Burnt Hills (NY) in its final pool play game on Wednesday. Both teams need a victory to stay in the running for a semifinal spot.

"This team is so hungry for wins, so hungry to earn respect for DC baseball," Assistant coach Seth Rosenthal said. "They did it in the first two games, but today took us another step towards earning DC baseball some respect."

Wayne National advances to New Jersey Section 1 Championship

Written by Kyle Stackpole, contributing writer

For the second game in a row, Washington Township played a thriller, although this one was of the high-scoring variety. To make matters worse, Township wasn’t able to pull off the late-game heroics.

Wayne National 10, Washington Township 8
Washington Township took a surprising 3-0 lead early in the game with Wayne National’s star pitcher Dominic Cancellieri on the mound. He exited the game early on with just 35 pitches keeping him available for the championship game.
Wayne National got on the board in the third, when Ari Field knocked in John Boscarino. After singles from Cancellieri and Field, things got even better for Wayne National. Steven DiPaolo hit a three-run bomb and Wayne National was on top 4-3. The kids from Wayne weren't done yet. Danny Murphy added a two-run shot of his own, giving Wayne National a 6-3 lead.
Washington Township stole one back in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-4. In the top of the fourth, it was Cancellieri’s turn to join the home run parade. He hit a two-run shot that left the yard quicker than any I have seen in this tournament so far.

Washington Township was not going down without a fight. They mustered three hits and three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to just 8-7.
After a scoreless fifth, Wayne National received some much needed insurance. Hits by Boscarino, Cancellieri, and Field gave Wayne National two more runs and a three-run lead heading into the last inning. Washington Township threatened in the bottom half, but could only put one across, giving Wayne National the huge win.
Boscarino, Cancellieri, and Field were incredible for Wayne National. They were 8-for-9 with four runs batted in and five runs scored. With the win, Wayne National advances to the Sectional title game on Thursday. Washington Township is now forced to play tomorrow against Par-Troy East, who eliminated Somerset Hills in the late game.

On a side note, this was one of the best little league games I have seen. It was back and forth and full of drama. In addition, Dominic Cancellieri is a name to look out for down the road if Wayne National continues to advance. He is a star in the making.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Wayne National played without its third and fourth hitters tonight. Unknown reasons. Very impressive victory.

Monday's Little League Roundup (July 15, 2013)

We hit some of the Northwest, New England, Midwest, and Europe today on our road trip around the Little League world. I personally went out to my home section's winners' bracket final today in New York Section 4. Pearl River Little League continued to dominate its opponents after a bit of a slow start against Fishkill. Sean Flaherty proved to me once again that he's an elite hitter in this age group with his fifth home run in four games and a HUGE three-run hit. He's for real. I'm not sure Pearl River has the pitching to bring home a state championship this year, but they certainly hit up and down the order. They bunt the heck out of the ball too. Away we go.........

New Hampshire

The state finals are set in New Hampshire. Salem won a tough District 1 with a walk-off home run from John Olivo to pull out a 9-7 victory in the “if” game. Bedford forced the “if” game over the weekend with a 19-1 thrashing of Salem.

Salem will face Rye LL from District 2 in the best-of-three state finals. Rye romped through its district unbeaten and won the state championship as 10-year olds two years ago. Expect to see a lot of long balls.

Germany

KMC Little League of Rammstein AFB is looking to get back to Williamsport in the newly created Europe & Africa region. KMC is 3-0 so far with a couple of thrashings in its last two games. The American boys from Germany have a lot of pop in their bats.

Nebraska

Kearney went all the way to the Little League World Series last year and now they’ve caught the bug. Kearney waltzed into the state tournament with big victories over its district foes. Kearney returns at least two players with LLWS experience as well as a coach. That’s important when/if they reach the regionals again.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island state tournament is always one of the toughest in the country. All four districts are strong and they love their baseball. Perennial-power Lincoln is back in the state tourney after a few years and they dominated too. Johnston should come out of District 1 and they look very strong. Coventry upended the 11-year old state champions in their district.

Washington

Washington is into its winners bracket semifinals right now and quite frankly, I don’t know the teams that are there. None of them have a long term pedigree in the state. There’s no Kents, Redmond’s, Richland’s, etc… It’ll be interesting. West Seattle had the biggest blowout victory, but also had a bye.

Oregon

I don’t have any news out of Oregon yet, but I had to go on one of my scheduling rants. I’ve always hated single elimination at every level. It’s atrocious, especially after pool play. Well, Oregon decided to find out who the best team in the state is this year with a single elimination tournament of nine teams. They all play like 3-4 pool play seeding games that mean nothing, then play single elimination from there on out. It is completely mind-boggling to me.

Vermont
South Burlington continued its quest towards a repeat trip to Bristol CT for the New England regional. The boys from Burlington routed everyone in their district including a 14-1 victory in the final. They have approximately 5-6 players back from last year’s run in the regional.

Delaware

The big news in Delaware today is that Newark National is looking great again. National has won back-to-back state championships and then went 7-1 in pool play at the Mid-Atlantic regional in those years. A 1-0 loss to Par-Troy East NJ kept them from Williamsport last year. Canal from Wilmington was supposed to be the state favorite, but Newark put a hurting on them tonight with a 10-2 victory behind Nate Hardcastle, the lone returner from last year’s 12-year old team. Watch out for the Nats.

Welcome to the 2013 Road to Williamsport

Hello everyone to another year of the Little League International Tournament. We're really going to blow it out of the box this year. We're going to have more contributors to the blog, so I don't have the brunt of the writing.

We have representatives from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Washington D.C in the states. We'll see if anyone wants to contribute from outside the region as well. Our first guest entry is going to be written all the way from Japan though. It's extremely insightful into what it takes to get through the Japanese National Tournament on the way to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series.

If you'd like to be a contributor with any recaps, previews, history, general thoughts, or anything really... just email me: Section1GuyCom@aol.com.

Check back daily. Thanks!

2012 Mid-Atlantic Region Preview

Tournament History: In the 11 years of the Mid-Atlantic region, Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland have each won three championships. Delaware and New Jersey each have one title, with District of Columbia looking for its first trip to a regional final, let alone the title itself.

2012 Team Pedigree: Newark National (DE) and Northwest Washington (DC) are both returning for the second consecutive year to the regional. Newark has been to the regional six times prior to 2012, and its 11-6 overall in the tournament. Newark National made the regional semifinals four times. Northwest Washington is 0-8 all-time in the regional, but NWLL returns seven players from last year. That’s a significant experience advantage.

Stony Point (NY) won its first state title in 2010 and returns this year. Assistant coach John Greeley was an assistant two years ago as well when he coached his oldest son, SS/P John. Now, he coaches SS/P Stephen. West Salisbury (MD) has two previous state championships, both within the last ten years. In 2007, WS made it to Williamsport after finishing fourth in pool play.

Par-Troy East (NJ) and Collier Township (PA) both won their first state titles this year. PTE doesn’t have history in the 12-year old division but became the first New Jersey team to win state championships at different age groups (PTE won NJ’s 11-year old title last year). Collier will look to piggy back the success of Keystone Little League which won the regional title a year ago.

Team Previews (Tournament Records in Parentheses)

Northwest Washington, DC (4-0): District of Columbia is traditionally the weakest team at the region and that should be the case again this year. NWLL has become a force in DC recently and this could be their best team yet. They return seven players from last year’s team. They easily won the DC tournament. NWLL not only has the only girl in the regional tournament this year in Sydney Love-Baker, but Love-Baker has turned into one of the team’s top hitters and is fantastic behind the plate. Her twin brother Ty is also one to watch. Owen Isaacs is the team’s ace and will look to steal a victory somewhere to give the league its first win ever at regionals.

Newark National, DE (9-1): Newark went undefeated in pool play a year ago and faltered in a tough battle with Paramus, NJ. With multiple players returning from that team and a 10-year old state title under their belts, Newark is looking to go even further. The two unquestioned leaders of the team are Matt Theodorakis and Clayton Hansen. Theodorakis is a bonafide star in the leadoff spot and Hansen is an excellent top of the rotation starter.

Stony Point, NY (11-1): Stony Point comes into the regional after handling the state of New York fairly easily. The lone blemish on Stony Point’s record is a 12-inning loss in the state finals game one. Stony Point’s pitching is its strength. The team has two top of the line pitchers in Brian Wholey and Stephen Greeley. Both throw hard. Stony Point has a deep lineup with power throughout. Ray Pacella is the probably the team’s most consistent hitter.

Par-Troy East, NJ (14-1): Par-Troy lost its first game in the state final four and needed to win four straight games to make it back. With the explosive lineup they possess, it was almost easy. With power up and down the lineup, Par-Troy can slug with anyone. Bener Uygun hits homeruns and doubles nearly every time up and is an RBI machine. Emil Matti is powerful at the top of the order and has dynamite speed. Anthony Scannelli is fearsome in the cleanup spot and Vinny Prezioso has two homeruns in his last two games.

West Salisbury, MD (9-1): West Salisbury came out of nowhere to win the state of Maryland which had two other potential favorites, but that’s not for lack of talent. Matt Chrysostome is the team’s leader at the plate and gets the job done on the mound too. He and Grason Winterbottom form a solid pitching duo. Cade Hurley hits homeruns in bunches.

Collier Township, PA (11-0): Collier wasn’t the favorite in the Pennsylvania state tournament, but found a way to win and is one of lone undefeated teams left in the entire country (welcome to pitch count rules!). Collier can outslug almost anybody and it starts with Reed Bruggeman. Bruggeman clubbed two homeruns in the state tournament and racked up 11 RBI. He hit .583. Steve Alauzen also hit .583 and smacked a pair of homeruns. He had 8 RBI. In all, Collier drove 12 balls over the fence in the four state tournament games and nine different players hit one. Pitching may be Collier’s biggest issue, but with bats like theirs, it may be good enough.

Projected Records

New York 3-1

New Jersey 3-1

Pennsylvania 3-1

Maryland 2-2

Delaware 1-3

Washington, D.C. 0-4

Semifinals: New York over Maryland 4-1, New Jersey over Pennsylvania 8-5.

Final: New York 5, New Jersey 4

Nebraska: Kearney Little League

Nebraska: Kearney Little League

Thirty-Year History: 2011, 2010, 2008, 2000.

Number of Majors Team: Eight

Roster: N/A

Preview: Kearney has become the power program in the state of Nebraska in recent years winning four of the last five state championships now after a 15-0 thrashing of Blair in the Nebraska state championship. According to Nebraska Central News, Blake Quintana and Jared Wegner each homered for Kearney in the title game. Wegner tossed a complete-game four-inning shutout. Kearney made it all the way to the Midwest Regional championship game a season ago dropping a 4-2 decision to Harney (Rapid City), South Dakota. While the College World Series is fully supported in Nebraska each year in Omaha, no team from the Cornhusker State has ever reached Williamsport for the Little League World Series.

North/South Dakota: Canyon Lake (Rapid City, SD)

North/South Dakota: Canyon Lake Little League (Rapid City, SD)

Thirty-Year History:  Regional Champs (2008), State Champs: 2010, 2008, 2003, 2000, 1998, 1996, 1995, 1993, 1992, 1982

Number of Majors Teams: Eight

 Roster

Manager: Mike Good

Noah Johnson
Cooper Bowman
Tanner Good
Ian Krump
Brooks Rainwater
Sam Morrison
Will Moore
Kai Torgerson
Connor King
Jack Sorensen
Austin Franke
Brian Petereit

Preview: Canyon Lake is no stranger to Little League success. Although it’s a short road to regionals for the North/South Dakota champion, getting out of Rapid City is tough with rival leagues like Harney around. Canyon Lake is 4-1 so far on the road to Williamsport with victories over Spearfish, South Dakota (17-0), Timberline, South Dakota (10-2), and Fargo, North Dakota (11-3). In the championship game, Canyon Lake dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Rushmore, South Dakota, but bounced back in the “if” game to take the title easily 11-3.  Canyon Lake has been led by solid pitching and defense. Offensively, Canyon Lake puts the ball in play as well as anybody. Connor King struck out 21 batters in his last two starts and belted two homeruns in the winner’s bracket final. He was intentionally walked three times in the championship game.

Canyon Lake opens up the Midwest Regional in Indianapolis against the Missouri state champion. Harney Little League (also from Rapid City) advanced all the way to the Little League World Series a year ago.

Welcome to the 2012 Road to Williamsport!

Hello, Little League fans.

This is the first of many blog posts you'll see from me, your resident Little League "expert," this summer. I've been following and covering the Little League tournament since 1998 from the district level in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey right up to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, PA.

I've attended every year of the Eastern Regional in Bristol since 2001 and that includes nearly every pool play game and every semifinal and final. It's my favorite week of the year. To me, it's bigger than the World Series itself.

The Reason?

Teams are still wearing their home uniforms, its the first time a lot of teams in the East are on the road. There's the pomp and circumstance of the World Series, but none of the "we're just happy to be here" that you get in Williamsport.

This blog will focus on Bristol for that week more than the other regions, but we'll have plenty of information about them as well.

Be sure to check back every day and night for multiple blog entries and tell anyone you know that this is the place to be for Little League coverage.

It's currently July 20th and I'm making my first irrational prediction!

Your pre-state tournament picks to WIN the New England and Mid-Atlantic regionals are....drum roll, please........

New England: Fairfield American, CT

Mid-Atlantic: Warwick Township, PA

More on these teams later! Check back soon!
