Universal Little League of Corpus Christi, Texas is headed to Williamsport. Jacob Garza led the way with a monster home run and 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball as he overpowered Fairacres (NM) in a 6-0 victory to clinch the first spot in the Little League World Series from the United States. Juan Sosa came on in relief and completed the no-hitter. The victory gives Universal and the city of Corpus Christi its first regional championship ever. In fact, no team from Corpus Christi has ever won a Texas state championship previously.

Coming into the regional, Texas West, Texas East, and Louisiana were all stuck in the same pool. Tradionally, they're the three strongest teams in the Southwest Region Tournament. Despite the tough schedule, Universal was a perfect 5-0 in regional play after coming through the loser's bracket in the Texas West state tournament.

In the regional, Jesus Ortiz caught fire and was nearly impossible to get out all week long. He hit .562 in the five regional games with five home runs. Garza, who was 3-for-3 in the title game, hit a robust .538 and bashed three homers. He only allowed one hit on the mound in 10.1 innings of work. Brandon DeLeon led the team in RBIs and hit .385. Juan Sosa was nearly as dominant as Garza on the hill. He gave up just one hit in 6.1 innings of work. Together, the dynamic duo had a WHIP of just 0.66.

It's very obvious that Universal will be a tough out in the Little League World Series with big time bats and shut down pitching. Universal will face the Northwest champion in the first United States bracket game at 3 p.m. EST on Thursday August 15. The other two teams in Universal's US bracket include the champions from New England and the Southeast. It's definitely a tough draw.
