Big Little Leaguers in size and stature have led their teams to Williamsport for the Little League World Series. Some of them have become a part of Little League folklore after winning the entire thing. Players like Sean Burroughs, Cody Webster, and Luke Ramirez are well-known “man-children” to the common fan.
Chad Lorkowski is trying to become the next.
Lorkowski took a big step towards that accomplishment by putting his team on his back in the Great Lakes Regional Championship. Lorkowski slugged two home runs and struck out 10 batters in five innings on the mound to lead Grosse Pointe Woods Shores to a 10-3 victory over unbeaten Jackie Robinson West Little League of Chicago, Illinois.
Grosse Pointe is the first team from Michigan since Georgetown National in 1998 to reach the Little League World Series.
Antonio Moceri blasted two home runs at the regional including one in the championship game. He’s hitting .500. John Lizza has a home run at the regional and a .500 on-base percentage, and without Tommy Maxey’s three-run walk-off home run in the semifinal victory over Hamilton West Side (OH), GPWS wouldn’t be in Williamsport.
Lorkowski, Moceri, and Jimmy Mazzola handle most of the pitching for Grosse Pointe.
GPWS will face the West champion on Friday at 3 p.m.
